🎭 Intro

This channel talks about movies in slow, clear English to help you practise your English listening comprehension. What happens when the most powerful girl in the galaxy would rather party than be a hero — until someone hurts her dog? Let’s talk about Supergirl.

Let’s start with the story. As her twenty-third birthday gets closer, Kara Zor-El spends her time travelling from party to party across the galaxy, with her dog Krypto by her side. Her cousin keeps calling her, hoping she’ll finally visit him on Earth, but Kara keeps ignoring him.

Grammar notes appear beside each highlighted example.

⭐ The verdict

Rating

Teacher Teddy celebrating

A rougher, more personal story that rewards giving it a genuine chance. So, what’s the final verdict on Supergirl? If you’re looking for a traditional, polished superhero story, this unconventional, rougher approach might not be exactly what you expect. However, if you enjoy a rougher, more personal story about revenge, loyalty, and family, this is well worth your time. Audiences have generally embraced it more than critics have, and its life after cinemas suggests it’s a film that rewards giving it a genuine chance. Milly Alcock’s performance alone makes it worth watching, and Jason Momoa’s Lobo brings a genuinely irreverent energy that balances out the heavier, more emotional parts of Ruthye’s story. If you go in expecting something closer to a space western than a typical cape movie, there’s a good chance this ends up being one of the more memorable superhero films of the year.

Rated 12A in the UK, PG-13 in the US · CEFR B2

Learning focus recap

Twelve contrast examples from the episode, each showing where the connector sits — plus the five bonus words.

However (new sentence)

Introduces a contrasting idea right after a different point.

Kara refused at first; however, once her dog was hurt, that refusal disappeared.
Despite + -ing

Before an -ing verb — something happens when we wouldn’t expect it.

Despite being one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy, Kara travels like an ordinary person.
Even though (what vs does)

Two contrasting ideas in one sentence.

Even though Lobo is a bounty hunter, not a hero, he travels alongside them.
However + adjective

Contrast within one description, not between sentences.

However chaotic Lobo seems, he consistently shows up.
Despite + noun

What we’d expect vs how she actually behaves.

Despite her young age, Ruthye is often the most emotionally steady character.
Even though (change)

Starting point vs how far she travels from it.

Even though Kara begins by avoiding responsibility, she takes on a mission with real stakes.
Despite (side by side)

Two things we’d expect to conflict exist together.

Despite adapting a dark comic, the film finds real room for humour.
Despite (reviews)

A result that goes against what the reviews suggest.

Despite that mixed critical reaction, audiences rated it higher.
However mixed

Overall reception vs one unified element of it.

However mixed the reviews have been, the reaction to Alcock has stayed positive.
However, (turn)

Signals a turn in the story.

However, once it was available at home, it found major success on streaming.
Even though (comeback)

Disappointing run vs the positive conversation that followed.

Even though its time in cinemas didn’t match expectations, many now call it a comeback story.
However (verdict)

The verdict itself uses the connector to turn.

It might not be what you expect. However, if you enjoy a more personal story, it’s worth your time.
Teacher Teddy thinking

The three connectors to remember: However — introduces a contrasting idea, usually at the start of a new sentence, or directly before an adjective (“She refused at first; however, everything changed.” “However chaotic he seemed, he always showed up.”) Despite — before a noun or an -ing verb, to show something happens even when we might not expect it (“Despite the mixed reviews, audiences liked it.”) Even though — connects two contrasting ideas within one single sentence (“Even though it struggled in cinemas, it found success on streaming.”) All three introduce a surprising or opposite idea — the difference is mostly about where they sit in the sentence.

Vengeance

Punishment for a wrong, especially a personal one.
