Welcome back for another English movie review lesson — I’m Teacher Teddy, and today, let’s talk about KPop Demon Hunters. Imagine you’re the most famous singer in the world, and you have a secret. If your fans found out, every one of them might turn against you. What would you do?
Today’s lesson is about music and fans. This film is full of songs, concerts and screaming fans, so it’s the perfect place to learn this language. By the end of this episode, you’ll know simple, real English for talking about bands, songs, shows, and the people who love them. The story begins with three young women: Rumi, Mira and Zoey. Together they are HUNTR/X, the biggest girl group in the world — a band made only of young women who sing and dance together. Rumi sings, Mira dances, and Zoey raps and writes the words.
Millions of people love HUNTR/X. These are their fans — a fan is someone who loves a band, a singer, a film or a sports team. If you love a band, you can say “I’m a huge fan of HUNTR/X.” It is a natural way to say you love something.
But HUNTR/X has a secret. When they are not singing, they are demon hunters, and their songs make a wall of light called the Honmoon, which keeps demons away from our world. Every time HUNTR/X sings a hit song — a very popular song that millions of people listen to — the wall gets stronger. If enough people sing their music, the Honmoon will turn gold and keep the demons away for good.
The film opens with the girls flying to a big concert — a live music show in front of an audience. You can also say a show. On the way, demons attack the plane. The girls fight them off with swords and songs, and still arrive in time.
At the venue, HUNTR/X walk out on stage — the raised area where singers perform.
The show is sold out — every ticket has been sold. Lights flash, fans scream, and it feels like a real K-pop concert.
I like how the film shows the crowd — the big group of people watching a show. When the crowd is happy, the Honmoon gets stronger; when it is sad or angry, it gets weaker. So the girls need the crowd to love them.
Deep underground, the demon king Gwi-Ma is angry, because HUNTR/X keeps stopping his demons. Then one demon, Jinu, has a clever idea: do not fight the girls with claws — fight them with music. So Jinu and four other demons become a boy band, the Saja Boys. They are handsome, they dance well, and their first song is very catchy — easy to remember, so it stays in your head all day. People hear it once and cannot stop humming it.
The Saja Boys are a rival band — a band that competes with yours for the same fans. Suddenly the girls are not the only stars in town, and every fan who moves to the demons makes the Honmoon weaker.
Meanwhile, all over the city, fans start to sing along to the Saja Boys’ song — to sing together with a song that is playing, or with a band on stage. It is one of the happiest sounds in the film.
Rumi has a secret of her own: strange purple marks on her skin, hidden under long sleeves and gloves. She is half demon, and believes the Golden Honmoon will make the marks go away.
This is my favourite part of the film. The girls need a new hit, but Rumi’s voice is failing: her marks spread, and her voice cracks. She meets Jinu in secret, hoping to stop the Saja Boys. But Jinu isn’t a simple bad guy. He’s hiding something too, just like her.
Then the big night arrives: the Idol Awards, the biggest music show of the year. Whoever wins the crowd could decide the future of the Honmoon. Rumi wants to sing. But her voice is breaking, and Mira and Zoey are starting to notice.
What happens at the Idol Awards, whether HUNTR/X gets the Golden Honmoon, and what Rumi decides about her secret — I won’t tell you here. What I can tell you is that the film’s biggest moment isn’t a fight. It’s a song — and it only works if someone finally stops hiding.
