About the film
Surf’s Up is a film from 2007. Cody Maverick is a young penguin. He wants to win a big surfing contest. Tank Evans is the champion. He has won the contest many times. Cody works hard every day. He wants to earn respect.
What do “win” and “earn” do?
Both words mean you get something good. But the way you get it is different.
You win a game, a race or a prize. Other people play too, and you beat them. You earn money or respect. There is no game. You work, and then you get it.
Here are the two words side by side:
Cody wants to win the contest. (he must beat Tank) Cody wants to earn respect. (he must work for it)
Ask one question: is there a game or a contest? Yes → win. No → earn.

A race is a contest. You beat other people → win.
❌ Lani wins money at the beach.
✅ Lani earns money at the beach.
She works for the money. Work → earn.
❌ Tank winned the contest last year.
✅ Tank won the contest last year.
The past form of “win” is “won”. There is no “winned”.
❌ Cody’s family wins a living in Shiverpool.
✅ Cody’s family earns a living in Shiverpool.
A living is money from work. Work → earn.
One more thing
This part is a little harder. You can come back to it later.
Win money? Yes, but only from a lottery or a bet. You do not work for it. For money from a job, use earn.
✅ Chicken Joe won ten dollars in a bet. ✅ Lani earns money at the beach.
