The rule in one sentenceUse in for big places and long times (in the city, in June), on for surfaces and days (on a flower, on Monday), and at for one exact point (at the door, at seven o’clock).
About the film
Bee Movie is a film from 2007 about Barry, a young bee who lives in a big hive in New York. He finishes school, but he does not want to work in the honey factory for the rest of his life. On his first trip outside the hive, he meets Vanessa, a woman who works at a flower shop.
What does it do?
In, on and at tell us where and when. Think of a camera. In is the big picture. On is smaller. At is one small point.
The same three words work for places and for times. Look at the tiles.
The first three tiles are places. A hive is a space with walls, so we say in. A flower is a surface, so we say on. A shop is one point on the map, so we say at. The last tile is a time.
And at? It is the smallest point: at the door, at the shop, at seven o’clock, at night.
A bee sits on a flower in the park at nine o’clock.
One sentence, three words: on a surface, in a big place, at an exact time.

Common mistakes

A city is a big place, so use “in”.
❌ The bee lands in the table.
✅ The bee lands on the table.
A table is a surface, so use “on”.
❌ Bee Movie came out on 2007.
✅ Bee Movie came out in 2007.
Years always take “in”.
❌ The bees start work in nine o’clock.
✅ The bees start work at nine o’clock.
An exact clock time takes “at”.
One more thing
This part is a little harder. You can come back to it later.
Night is different. We say in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening. But we say at night.
✅ Bees work in the morning.
✅ Bees sleep at night.
When you add a day, use on: on Monday morning, on Friday night.
