How to describe an action that was already in progress at a specific moment in the past — and how it connects to the actions around it.

The rule in one sentenceUse the past continuous (was/were + -ing) for an action already in progress at a specific past moment — it sets the scene, and a shorter past simple action often interrupts it.
What does the past continuous actually do?
The past continuous doesn’t move a story forward — it freezes one moment and lets you look inside it. Instead of naming a finished event, it shows an action already happening, part-way through, at a point you choose.
Picture the opening of Contagion: while doctors were struggling quietly to identify the illness in the background, a business traveller was carrying it home on a flight from Hong Kong, completely unaware of what was coming. Two actions, running in parallel, both unfinished at that moment — that’s the past continuous doing its job.
It’s just as useful for a single background action interrupted by something shorter. In The Thing, the researchers were relaxing at their Antarctic base when the creature attacked. The longer action (relaxing at the base) sets the scene; the shorter action (attacked) cuts straight through it and takes the past simple.
🎬 Compare: “While scientists were racing for a cure in Outbreak, the virus was spreading calmly through the small town” (two actions in progress, side by side) vs “The virus reached the town’s water supply overnight” (one finished event, a single point on the timeline).
The continuous paints the ongoing scene; the past simple marks the moment that changes everything.
You’ll also meet the past continuous used simply to report what was happening at a stated time, with no interruption at all: At 9pm last night, I was watching First Man at the cinema. The time itself (9pm) is enough to anchor the scene.

When to use which
Past continuous
- Scene-setting at the start of a story: It was already dark by the time the family was driving to their new house in Insidious.
- Two parallel actions: While the band was rehearsing in Bohemian Rhapsody, Freddie Mercury was writing new lyrics backstage.
- An action interrupted by something shorter: The crew was assembling the set for Dredd when the power went out.
- A stated moment, no interruption needed: At midnight, half the cinema was still watching the Nope credits.
Past simple instead
- One completed action after another: Jim searched the hospital, escaped the infected, and found the other survivors in 28 Days Later.
- A single finished event, no ongoing background: Carrie left the prom in one of horror cinema’s most famous scenes.
- A repeated habit in the past: M. Night Shyamalan appeared in a brief cameo in almost every one of his films.
- A general fact about the past: The Silence of the Lambs won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1992.

Common mistakes

State verbs like know, believe, want describe a condition, not an action in progress — they don’t take the continuous form.
❌ When the phone was ringing, Cage answered it in Edge of Tomorrow.
✅ When the phone rang, Cage answered it in Edge of Tomorrow.
A single short interrupting action takes the past simple, even after “when” — save the continuous for the longer background action.
❌ They was filming The Host in South Korea for several months.
✅ They were filming The Host in South Korea for several months.
Plural subjects need were, not was — an agreement slip that’s easy to miss when speaking quickly.
❌ I was going to watch the Paranormal Activity films every Friday when I was a student.
✅ I went to watch the Paranormal Activity films every Friday when I was a student.
A repeated habit over a period needs the past simple, not the continuous — the continuous is for one moment in progress, not a routine.
Exceptions & tricky cases
1. State verbs stay simple. Verbs like love, know, believe, own, understand describe a state, not an activity, so they resist the continuous even when the surrounding sentence is full of action.
✅ Audiences loved An American Werewolf in London from its very first scene, not “were loving”.
2. “Always/constantly” + past continuous = a complaint. Adding always or constantly to the past continuous turns a habit into an annoyed observation.
✅ The director said the lead actor was constantly forgetting his lines on the set of Sinister.
3. Two continuous actions can share one “while”. When both halves of the sentence describe something in progress, both verbs go continuous.
✅ While Jay was standing at the edge of the pool in It Follows, her friends were waiting nearby.
4. Not every “when” clause is short. Occasionally the “when” clause itself describes a longer background situation — in that case it can take the continuous too, and the shorter action moves to the other clause.
✅ When Lena was travelling deeper into the Shimmer in Annihilation, she encountered a strange mutation.

A specific past moment (9pm) with no interruption needed — the past continuous shows what was in progress then.
2. While Gerry ___ from the horde, his family found shelter in World War Z.
“While” introduces the background action in progress — past continuous.
3. The phone ___ while the detective was searching the house in The Grudge.
The short interrupting action takes the past simple, even though the background action stays continuous.
4. Wes Craven ___ more than a dozen films across his career.
A general fact about a finished career takes the past simple, not an action in progress.
5. They ___ V for Vendetta on location for months before the film’s release.
“For months” describes an extended action already in progress at that time — past continuous.
6. Damien ___ in one of horror cinema’s most talked-about scenes in The Omen.
A single, complete action — the past simple, not the continuous.
7. ___ the crew improvising when the cabin set kept collapsing during the filming of Evil Dead II?
“Was/Were + subject + -ing” forms a past continuous question.
8. I ___ The Ring trailer for the first time when my phone battery died.
The background action in progress gets interrupted by a shorter one (died) — past continuous for the first verb.
