Grammar › Nouns › Compound Nouns & Noun Modifiers

The rule in one sentencePut two nouns together to make a compound noun like space station; the first noun describes the second, so it is a singular noun, even with a number: a two-hour film, not a two-hours film.

About the film

Star Wars: A New Hope is a 1977 space adventure. Luke Skywalker is a young farm boy on Tatooine, a desert planet with two suns. He works on his uncle’s moisture farm and dreams of flying a spaceship. One day he finds a secret message inside a small robot, and his quiet life starts to change.

What does it do?

English often joins two nouns to name one thing. The second noun is the main idea. The first noun tells you what kind. A farm boy is a boy who works on a farm. A space station is a station in space.

Here is the important part. The first noun works like an adjective, and adjectives never take -s. So we say a two-hour film and a ten-year-old boy. We never say “a two-hours film”.

Luke is a farm boy who wants a different life.
He wants to become a pilot and fly a spaceship.
Star Wars is a two-hour film full of adventure.
The small robot carries a hologram message.

Look at the first and third tiles. “Farm boy” is a fixed name for a kind of person. “Two-hour” is a quick description built for one sentence. Both use a singular noun in front.

Two nouns, one thing
The first noun stays singular
one word spaceship, lightsaber
not a shoe shop, not a shoes shop
two words space station, farm boy
not a ten-minute walk, not a ten-minutes walk
with a hyphen sister-in-law
not a two-hour film, not a two-hours film
plural two spaceships
plural two car doors, not two cars doors

Luke watches the sunset on his home planet. It is a famous two-sun sunset.
“Sunset” is one word. In “two-sun sunset”, the number and noun describe the sunset, so “sun” stays singular.

space+station
+

The Empire has a huge space station.

−

Some compounds are one word, some are two. Check a dictionary.
?

Light + saber → one word.

singular noun — no -s in front

number+singular noun+noun
two+hour+film
+

We have a two-hour drive to the cinema.

−

It isn’t a one-person job. He needs help.

Use a hyphen between the number and the noun.

Minute, not minutes: it describes the flight.

When to use each one

compound noun — naming things

  • Machines and vehicles: Luke dreams of flying a spaceship.
  • Jobs and people: He is a farm boy, not a pilot yet.
  • Places: The desert planet is hot and empty.
  • New words in stories: A lightsaber is a sword made of light.

singular noun — describing

  • Time: It is a two-hour film.
  • Age: Luke is not a ten-year-old child any more.
  • Size: I live in a two-storey house.
  • What kind of thing: Uncle Owen needs farm robots, not toy robots.

Common mistakes

❌ Star Wars is a two-hours film.

✅ Star Wars is a two-hour film.

The number and noun describe the film, so “hour” stays singular.

❌ Luke works on a farm of moisture.

✅ Luke works on a moisture farm.

Put the “kind” noun first. English does not need “of” here.

❌ He wants to fly a ship space.

✅ He wants to fly a spaceship.

The main noun always comes last. A spaceship is a kind of ship.

❌ Luke’s uncle buys two farms robots.

✅ Luke’s uncle buys two farm robots.

The -s goes only on the main noun, “robots”. “Farm” just says what kind.

One more thing

This part is a little harder. You can come back to it later.

The plural -s goes on the main noun. That is usually the last noun: one space station, two space stations. A few older compounds are different. The main noun comes first, so the -s goes there: passers-by, mothers-in-law, runners-up.
✅ one spaceship, two spaceships; one farm boy, two farm boys (normal plural)
✅ The film contest had two runners-up. (-s on “runner”)

Practice: choose the right form

Eight questions. Choose one answer. You get the answer, and why.

1. Star Wars is a ___ film.

“Hour” describes the film, so it stays singular.

2. Luke is a ___ on Tatooine.

The main noun comes last: a boy who works on a farm.

3. Luke dreams of flying a ___.

“Spaceship” is one word. English does not need “of”.

4. The old man shows Luke a ___.

Light + saber → lightsaber, one word, no -s.

5. It is a ___ walk to the town.

Number + noun in front of another noun → singular.

6. Star Wars has famous ___.

The main noun comes last: it is music, written for a film.

7. My brother is a ___ boy.

Age before a noun: “ten-year-old”, all singular.

8. After the film, the ___ said hello to the actors.

In “passer-by” the main noun is first, so the -s goes there.

Your turn

Choose one ending. Then listen to your sentence.

Near my home there is a …

Tonight I want to watch a two-hour …

Every sentence here is correct. Pick the one that is true for you. Say it out loud too!
